Art is all around in Waycross, Ga. The Okefenokee Heritage Center Art Guild has been extremely busy bring art to the community. The Heritage Center has monthly displays they host from a variety of artists. Always worth the short trip out there to see the exhibits each month. The newest venues are also a great place to see what your local artists have been up to. Satilla Regional Hospital has a wall dedicated to The OHC Art Guild. These are paintings that are changed out every three months and are FOR SALE. Just pick out the one you want to grace your home or office with and pay for it at the gift shop. This benefits the Heritage Center and the Hospital Auxiliary. It's a win win.... Now take a short drive downtown to the Pond View Restaurant and Inn. Gracing their walls are more( you guessed it )art. Not massed produced art like you see everywhere else but original art and photography . The artists are all local, they work hard at bringing this out to where you are. They are the artists represented through the art and photography guilds of the Heritage Center.

Okefenokee Heritage Center Holds Youth Art Exhibition

The Okefenokee Heritage Center will hold its annual Youth Art Exhibition during the month of April. The art center will exhibit the work of young artists from Atkinson, Bacon, Brantley, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, and Pierce, and Ware Counties. The exhibition will be a celebration of the creativity of the area’s youth, ages six through eighteen. There will be no entry fee for the exhibition. The young artists must bring their art works to the Okefenokee Heritage Center at 1460 N. Augusta Ave. in Waycross by Tuesday, April 5. Teachers may deliver groups of artworks from their students or school. Home-schooled students are especially encouraged to take part in the exhibition. A reception announcing the winners will take place on Thursday, April 7 from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m.

The guidelines for entry are: one entry per student; any medium, including sculpture, will be accepted; entries on paper should be mounted on a heavy construction paper, mat board or cardboard showing a 2½” boarder around the piece; and each work should have a label in the lower left corner with the student’s name, grade level, teacher’s name and school. Homeschool entries should have a contact name and phone number listed on the back.

Each elementary level student entering the exhibition will receive a certificate of participation in the exhibition. Entries from middle school and high school level students will be judged. First, second and honorable mention ribbons will be awarded to the winners in the middle school level and the high school level.

Youth artworks may be delivered to the OHC during regular office hours of 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Children’s Art Class

The OHC is putting together art classes for children from tots to teens. The classes for tots will concentrate on developing basic physical skills necessary for proper child development. The classes for older children will concentrate on developing technique and exploring media.

The cost for the Children’s Art Class is $60 per month for OHC Members and $80 for non-members. The classes will begin on Saturday, March 5 from 10:00am-12:00pm.

Understanding Color: Improving Your Work through Color Theory

Ever wonder why certain colors work together in painted art the way they do? Or how they mix and combine for visual effects in paintings that always get certain reactions from viewers? Want to better master the science of these secrets for your own artworks so that you can use this knowledge at will, and with better understanding? Local Area Artist Les Walker brings his lifetime of experience using and studying Color in Art, which includes a degree from Savannah College of Art and Design, Art and Murals at the Jacksonville Zoo, and a wide range of other endeavors.

Supplies needed are: acrylic paint (basic colors only as you will be mixing what you need), brushes, illustration board and possibly an easel. Most works will not be very large and can be done on desk or tables provided.

Any and all painting supplies can also be obtained at Sweet P’s in Hoboken, GA.

The course will be covered in six continuous sessions, starting Saturday morning March 5th and each Saturday after, concluding on Saturday April 9th. Each session will run from 10am to 12 noon.

By the end of the final session, the artists/students will have produced by their own hand, usable reference tools for the better understanding of color, and at least one work of art showing applications of the learned information.

Okefenokee Heritage Center Seeking Artists for 2010 Exhibitions

The Okefenokee Heritage Center in Waycross is seeking submissions for Artists of the Month in 2010. The exhibit program features visual artists from southeast Georgia on a monthly exhibit schedule. The program has been in place at the regional art center and history museum almost since the institution’s inception over thirty years ago. Over the years, scores of talented artists have shown their work, illustrating the rich diversity of visual art in the region.

All artists, amateur or professional, working in all media, including sculpture, may be considered for exhibition. Interested artists should submit a portfolio showing photographs of their work, along with an artist’s statement explaining the type of work that they do, their inspiration for doing it, and the number of pieces that the artist has to exhibit. The portfolio should include a cover letter with the artist’s contact information in it, showing their name, address, phone numbers, and email address, if they have one. Anyone with questions about preparing a portfolio should contact Steve Bean, OHC Curator, at 912-285-4260 or by email at sbean@wayxcable.com.

The portfolios should be mailed or hand delivered to the Okefenokee Heritage Center office at 1460 N. Augusta Ave., Waycross, Ga. 31503. Office hours are 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Portfolio material may also be submitted via email. The deadline for portfolio submissions is Saturday, January 30.

Rock music has been around since I was young, it's amazing how music has changed over time. Our local Art Guild has an opportunity to participate in an Art Walk in downtown Waycross Ga. That is were the inspiration came from for this painting. There was a free concert, and I had fun taking many photos of everyone that night.. I played around with cropping etc, and I really liked the idea of the two colors Red and Green. So I grabbed my video camera and attempted to video me painting. Oh that was fun. If you haven't done it try it. So now I have my first video. You can see it on you tube, just type in my name and rocker and you will find it. I will be putting this up for auction shortly.

Jacqueline Johnson and Willie Character bring their children's

musical to Flying Dragon Arts Center. The local authors have

in-trusted this delightful show to the local children's theater. Ms.

Johnson formerly of Waycross moved to Hahira, a few years ago, to be

near her children. She is formerly employed with Waycross College,

where the show premiered in the early 90's. Jacqueline Johnson wrote

the script to go with the classic folk song "Froggie Went A Courtin'

".Jackie is the twin sister of local artist Bobbie Johnson.

Mr. Willie Character, long time Waycross resident and music

educator, wrote the beautiful score and lyrics for this musical comedy

set in the Okefenokee swamp.. Ten songs were written for the show,

some of which will be heard for this first time on stage. Director

Chris Jeffords states; " Mr. Character has written some of the most

beautiful music I have seen in any show." He went on to add; " Ms.

Johnson and Mr. Character take children's theater seriously and have

produced an outstanding musical."

The cast of 20 includes many returning actors, and a few new

faces. Featured in the role of Froggie is Millwood resident Jason

Arnold. Jason's wife Tanya is stage director and their son Ethan plays

numerous roles in the show. Ethan was a lobster in our August

production of Alice In Wonderland. Jason Arnold started performing at

a very young age. His mother, Nella Arnold, was an accomplished

country and gospel singer. Jason was hired for his first professional

singing job at the age of 15 and was nominated for several awards by

his peers. He has also been honored to perform on some of the most

prestigious stages in the country in more that 1000 live shows by the

age of 21. At which time he met is wife, Tanya Cardwell Arnold from

Pierce County. Ethan Arnold is 6 years old. They attend his home

church, Zion Hill Free Will Baptist Church in Millwood. Jason is also

a talented pianist and guitarist with a variety of abilities from

classical to

bluegrass, and has accompanied some of the most talented people in

the music industry. We are very honored to have the Arnold family in

Froggie Went A Courtin'.

Returning actors include Debbie Ratliff as Mousie, Amy Allen as

Farmer Brown, Rachel Cardwell as Mother Goose,and Victoria Wasdin as

Lady Blue. Melaine Tucker is making her debut at the arts center as

Miss Kitty. A large group of children will be representing the many

animals of the Okefenokee as well as famous nursery rhyme characters.

All are invited to this special show with so many local

connections. There will be only four performances and seating will be

limited due to the elaborate set. The theater has been rearranged to

offer everyone a seat close to the stage. Froggie Went A Courtin' the

next two weekends at the arts center. Saturday's at 7pm and Sunday's

Winter is quickly coming . We can feel it in the air in Waycross this weekend. There are so many things that artists can do to now that it will be cooler. Grab you camera and catch the morning sunrise or evening sunsets. There is so much color in the sky this time of year. If you don't have a camera. Take your sketch book and capture the trees as they are quickly going to change. Bring out your water colors and take a ride out to your favorite spot and spend what will be the last warm days. In other words get inspired with no humidity. Then come and share with all the other artists that you might not have met yet and inspire them. What other artists you ask? Well there are alot of them in South Georgia. You don't know where they all are? They are thinking they are alone as well. Some of us meet at the Heritage Center in Waycross on the 4 th Tuesday evening at 7 pm. Some more meet at the Train depot in Blackshear on the 2nd Thursday @6:30 pm . Valdosta, Alma, Douglas, St Mary's, Jesup also have a large art presence. We all welcome you the artist.

September is a wonderful month in South Georgia. The cool breezes begin and you can comfortably go outside. There was a Historic Walk in downtown Waycross, and some of the local artists tookout some of there art and displayed it along the side walks of downtown. The next art walk is Saturday Oct 3rd in Blackshear Ga from 9-2 come on out and support the arts.

I recently visited my home state of New Jersey. While there I enjoyed taking pictures with my digital Nikon. I don't travel as often as I would like to. My camera helps me to remember all my inspirations. Speaking on inspirations. The artists of this area of Georgia are in for a treat. It is official people of creative spirit are becoming accepted into the main stream. We have been working diligently to have a place to show art outside of the box. As of this month the OHC Artist Guild is one year in. We have put our brains together and have ideas sprouting everywhere. Every month we meet at the Okefenokee Heritage Center. It is informal , we might have speakers or just share info with each other. We also challenge each other to create. We have an art walk monthly at 2ND Saturday that Waycross Mainstreet is a sponsor of. This Sept we are hoping to have a large turnout of artists for the art walk we will have. More info later. Since our start the town next to us also has an art guild and a monthly art walk. So artists and art lovers Waycross area loves you .

Well This lady had the opportunity to go to the Garden State. Vacations are always needed, it gives you a new perspective. Your life can get too stagnate if you stay in one place for long. I came back ready to go and full of ideas. Yes we went fishing and dancing and ate , the president flew over my head and saw friends and family that have been there and I have been here. Whew.........Lets get busing growing the arts in our community...Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is time for our meeting on Tuesday, May 28th at 7: oo pm. It was one year ago when I met with the Heritage Center and expressed the need for this type of group. In the year that has passed we have accomplished so much as a guild. We have had monthly meetings and many interesting speakers. We also have opened our art work beyond our studio doors. There have been many opportunities for our artists to show their work. If you haven’t attended our meetings, come on out this time. You will find we are informal, and love to share information. This month”s speaker is Chris Jeffords. He is the director of the Flying Dragon Art Center here in Waycross. He and his family are amazingly talented. The OHC Art Guild busy at it again. The weather was perfect, the crowd amazing. This was another exceptional 2nd Saturday. Plenty of restaurants, vendors, and music was the best. Even the Childrens Art Center was out showing us the dates for the Wiz.

Hopefully by summer we will plan to expand our Art walk and take it to the side walks, store fronts and then watch out Waycross. Will Galleries be next? I would love to hear comments and I am always open for questions.

All I can say is how wonderful. Easter weekend in South Georgia, gave us amazing weather and a great turn out at Main Street 2nd Saturday event. The OHC art guild barley could set up before people started merging around the art displays. Roland Thurston commanded attention with his quick witted humor and his talented painting skills. Nancy King and I were also displaying some of our recent works. Brandon Jones a talented illustrator also gathered a large crowd. Steve Head Band a Christian Band from Waycross played I must say very impressive weekend. I can't wait for next month.

I have been busy with my daughters wedding and now that she is starting her new life with the man she loves, I will get started back in full swing.

Warm weather is here and it is time for every kind of out door event. This weekend is the 2nd Saturday event in downtown Waycross. We will have an art walk. Come Join Artist from all over South Georgia and display your Talent in the lovely Downtown Area of Blackshear. Any medium is acceptable and the more diversity the better. This event will give you the chance to share your art while picking up a few helpful tips from other artists in the area, (you may even find a new hobby!)
Bring your paintbrushes, sculpting clay, pencils, pens, or whatever you use to create Art. Also, bring along some of your recent work and we will provide large display easels for you to show your work. Each easel holds 4 canvases and are very sturdy.

The event will be the last Saturday of every month starting March 28 2009 from 11:00am until 6:00 pm. Dear Artists,
The Leadership Georgia group is having a dinner at the OHC on Thursday, March 19 in the OHC Depot Warehouse. If you would be interested in showing some of your work at the event please contact me as soon as possible. You will have to bring your artwork to the OHC by Tuesday, March 17. If you have 3 or 4 works that you would like to display, please send me an email. If you will put a card with the title, artist’s name, artist’s phone number, and the price with the work, we will try to sell it. The sale terms are the same as usual OHC art sales- 25% to OHC, 75% to artist.
Depending on the response you may be permitted to display more than 4 works. If you have any questions please contact me. Thanks for your help.

This is a new conception to improving the quality of life for people who live in and visit South Georgia. The best thing is it's free. Tonight I met with artists at a local coffee shop. What a great time we had as well as helping a new business in our downtown. We each ordered drinks and coffee. I had the large Caramel Latte. It was great. The evening was cool and someone forgot about us at our normal meeting place. So in a last minute decision we all ended up at Cafe' Evva. The art work on the walls were wonderful, and even if our meeting didn't go as planned, we enjoyed each others company. Thank you Roland for the muffins!! Evva we will do this again. If you haven't been to downtown Waycross Georgia, try visiting a wonderful artist's coffee shop. We did....

Art Walk at Waycross 2nd Saturday Event

On Valentines Day February 14 2009 the OHC Art guild were represented at the 2nd Saturday event in downtown Waycross Ga. The evening was a bit rainy. Yet the artists who were there stayed inspired. Many were interested in getting to know the artists, and were glad to see us be part if this monthly event. There will be more venues in coming months so keep following.

We grew up together. My brothers, sister and I. A whole life time has passed since our childhood. Yet we still have something that connects us , each other. I have lived hundreds of miles away from them for over twenty years. We have not had a family portrait done. Thanks to technology, I am able to place us together again. I know the economy is tough and people are forced to make desisions that are not easy. From what I see it will not get any easier. What inspires me are the creative people. They are those who adapt, tighten the belt loop and give it another shot. Come up with new ideas, and THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.... There are many reasons why we can not get involved, can not participate, can not create, can not sell, can not whatever. People in Waycross or your town( fill in the blank ) will never. The only one stopping you is you. Why not get involved, why not participate, why not create, why not sell, why not whatever.

Last night we had our Evening with the Art Guild. We had wonderful participation. Plenty of great Outside the Box ideas. With the dedication of a few and participation of many we will have a large art presence in Waycross. It is not for the lack of effort. Marilyn Bonacci,you are such an amazing person. Every month you work hard at venue's as well as newspaper ads. Barbara Lyken the things you do to promote art in our community is unmatched. Roland Thurston tried and true , you really get involved and stay inspired.

I'd love to offer a challenge to step outside of your comfort zone and become involved with this group or others.

Most of us make resolutions. As an example change, lose weight, just about anything we have been slack in we vow to do better. Looking back over the last year many things have come about. Not in a large way but in childlike steps. We have an art guild in Waycross Georgia now . The artists are excited about growing and showing their art. Once like minds get together there is no telling what can be accomplished. This economy has been a very tough one and I know as artists we can think outside of the box . My resolution this year is no excuses. Make it happen. How about you?

The Okefenokee Heritage Center Art Guild met this past Tuesday evening. The guest speaker was Steve Bean. Steve gave a presentation on the subject of theater art. He also showed us slides of sets he helped design in the past. I gave the artists a challenge at the last meeting to create something out of two objects. the objects were a can of pumpkin and a fork Above are the creations that were brought in. I did a Andy Warhol style of computer art. Shown is one picture of four. This was my first attempt at creating something with a computer. Next Nancy King created an acrylic painting of a can of pumpkin with a flower, I really liked the colors she used in it. Next Roland Thurston created a 3d design. I must agree we all enjoyed the displays.

My first Art Walk

These are a few of my paintings on display at an Art walk in downtown Waycross Ga . I started in January to change the way I have done a few things in my life. I sat down and wrote a plan on what I wanted to accomplish. In the past I let fear and self doubt take hold of my life. So I began this blog to keep an accounting. It is now November. In that amount of time I have spent researching asking questions and talking with other art guilds and started an Art Guild in my community, Actually if it wasn't for all those who have paved the way. Linda Cohen who bravely opened an Art and Framing shop as well as several artists in the community, the Heritage Center who whole heartedly opened their arms to this, and the tireless effort of the new guilds members , plus the acceptance of our communities this Art Walk and future events would still be way down the line. So now I have bravely stepped out of my comfort zone. My art is now on display, and out of the closet at home. As I named this blog the beginning such it is.

Waycross 2nd Saturday Nov

The Okefenokee Heritage Center Art Guild participated in the Waycross Georgia monthy 2nd Saturday Event. There was live music out under the stars. Everyone there enjoyed the music from Loop Deville, and food from South River BarBQ, as well as a demonstration from PAK Karate. The newly formed Art Guild also had an art walk in the Pheonix Building. Artists represented were Diane Boatright, Nancy King, Marilyn Bonacci, Dianne Davis and Roland Thurston. This is just the beginning for this art guild, through the months they have many agendas planned.

On Tuesday evening we had our monthly meeting. For those who never attended we welcome you to come on out. Artist are exciting people to be around. This month we had a guest speaker. Roland Thurston http://www.rolandthurston.com. The topic he spoke on was “Everything you always wanted to know about color but were afraid to ask” He is a local artist and very involved in the growth of art appreciation.

Another Pastel

This is another pastel. The second week of my pastel class that I took with Preston King a local pastelist from Homerville Ga. In this still life we were able to use some very overripe fruit. Once again I found this to be a fun drawing. I have never sat down and was able to capture an instant picture with oils , and I found the use of complimentery and contrasting colors to be rewarding. If I tried this with my oils I would be worrying about wet on wet. I do my paintings alla prima, all in one sitting. One day I might try to do it the classic way, but I have trouble coming back to anything with the same inspiration. So this is another first for me. A still life in pastels. Love it.

First Pastel Painting

I saw where someone placed their first painting on their blog. Well I am all about firsts. Here is my first ever pastel drawing. Last year I had the opportunity to take a pastel class with Preston King a very talented pastelist. This class was in the evenings, so I invited my husband of 26 years at the time to begin the class with me. You think you know someone after that many years but apparently I didn't. I found out my husband was also an artist and my best critic..... We started the class with understanding the color wheel. I fell in love with pastel. It was so much easier for me to draw and shape the picture and use more color than I would with oils. It was quick and I didn't have to worry about muddying up the colors and also more affordable. I must say I haven't done too much with pastel since. But looking back I am ready to delve in. These are my first an apple and a pear on Wallis board.

Ashley Fire Sale Update

This was the first year I have entered the Okefenokee Heritage Center's juried Art Show. I chickened out last year. This Oct 1st they announced the winners and the person who I thought would win did. Shelby has great talent, and an eye for detail. I do not envy the judges . There were alot of very talented people represented in the room. The reception was great. My son and husband found the food to be the main attraction. All the art will be on display for the rest of October. I have to start painting again soon.....

Gram Parsons and Okefenokee Heritage Center Waycross Ga

Last Sunday I visited the Heritage Center in Waycross Ga. It was there I learned about a young man named Gram Parsons. Where I grew up in NJ I never heard of him or his style of music. After visiting there I saw how instrumental he was in his short life. When you have a chance take a trip to this place and see the wonderful exhibit they have.

Sunday is my birthday and also the opening of the Gram Parsons exhibit at the Okefenokee Heritage Center. Today my daughter spent the day with me. She came down from Savannah. Tomorrow I might check out the exhibit and go out to dinner with my husband. It has been a busy week for . Yet alot has been accomplished.

OHC ART GUILD September Meeting

The Okefenokee Heritage Center Art Guild has met again last night. Each one of us are busy getting our art ready for the juried show this October. David Wasdin owner of Island Dave's Waycross and Blackshear, was our guest speaker. He has met with the Mayor of Blackshear, and Mr Loman of Blackshear, along with Dianne Davis . They met about our members having a day of plein air as well as showing their art at the Depot during the 2nd annual Pecan Festival. This is a great opportunity for our communities to see the amazing talent that is around them as well as giving them the opportunity to purchase original art art.

RollerCoaster Day

Today was a roller coaster day. A building next door to where I worked burned down through the night. It was a total loss. The building I work in had a lot of smoke damage and I am not sure when we can go back to work. I work on commission and support my household. Thankfully our company has found us something to do until everything gets cleaned up. I feel bad for the families of the men who worked next door to us. If the wind had changed direction it could have been alot worse. As the day progressed I received a phone call from Dianne Davis who has been diligent in organizing information for our Art Guild. We had a meeting with David Wasdin a local business owner . He shared with us about some great things that will be an opportunity for us artists.. Can't wait to share this with the art guild. More ups and downs happened through the day. But some great things have opened up. Check back soon ............

Childrens Art Center

I am posting this email I recieved from a Waycross group. They are starting an amazing adventure into childrens art. Please find a way to help them in this endeavor. Thank you Diane We are happy to announce that our dream is coming to fruition. We will be opening a nonprofit Children's Art Center in Waycross. We are in the final planing stages. We have rented the back of the Kress Building. Doris Germano, the building owner, has shown a dedication to children and the arts. Our portion of the building faces Alice Street. The address is 409 Alice Street. The building has 3800 square feet of mostly open space with 18 foot ceilings. Many have expressed excitement at seeing this wonderful old five and dime building in use again. A new air conditioning unit is being installed this week. This past week Oak Hill Baptist Church donated 22 ten foot oak pews. We are thankful for this wonderful blessing. Tamara, our children, Eve Hazen and I have been planning this for the last 3 months, but the dream goes back many years. Our goal is to have lessons in the many different disciplines of the arts: dance, drama, music, painting and crafts. We are also planing Children's Theater and art exhibitions. New painting

Creativity is one of the things that has been escapeing me. Plus starting an art guild really has taken time from painting. Last week I set up my paints and found some quiet time upstairs in my make shift studio. After watching some artists on youtube( who were a great inspiraton) I attempted to try another style of painting. In just a couple of hours I surprised myself. It's not a large painting but it speaks.

We had the first meeting of the Art Guild in our area. I was amazed at the amount of people in attendance. From what I could see there were alot of people anxious to begin on this project. We will be forming committees on planning an art festival, and several projects, as well as sharing with each other.

The Beginning

This has been named the beginning , mostly because that is just what it is. Let me explain a little better. Today is the day to start out on a new beginning. I am bringing some of my art out . It has been hanging on my friends walls, at a small gallery, also my daughters office. Other than that I have it at home . So this will be my start at letting everyone share with me about my paintings in a blog.
